World Environment Day Observance at ASMA

2025 World Environmental Day The second phase of the World Environmental day was held on the 5th June 2025, organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (N.C.C.E), at the Church of Pentecost, Kitase, dubbed “Beat plastic pollution”.

According to University of Environment and Sustainable Development, website, “… the world generates over 400 million tons of plastic, with approximately 40% used only once before being discarded. Unfortunately, a large portion of this waste ends up in rivers, oceans and soil, where it can take years to decompose". The Akwapim South municipality is also involved in the improper disposal of plastics, this necessitated for the display of drama to educate the students and public on the harm it causes and solution. Students from Divine Wisdom Academy, Kitase and Peduase Methodist JSS graced the occasion with an educational drama to caution the student on the harmful effects of careless disposal of plastics. The MCE, Hon. Paul Osae in his submission revealed that plans are underway for the assembly to commence a community sanitation program to cleanse the municipality, due to challenges with the Zoom lion Co. Ltd. He added that, the students would be invited to participate in the exercise to bring sanitation to the municipality.

Furthermore, he announced that, MCE’s have been mandated to spend 10 percent of funds which would be allocated to the assembly, to create a plastic recycle unit for the assembly. And also purchase other equipment to combat refuse to ensure cleanliness in the municipality.

Speaking at the forum, the vice principal of Akuapim Technical institute, Madam Joana Asinor, who was the special guest for the occasion, appreciated the N.C.C.E for spreading the good news of proper disposal of waste.

She charged all the participants to consider improper method of disposal of plastics as a challenge and tackle the menace. She also advised the student to contribute in raising a generation that Says,” no to pollution and yes to solution”, for the unborn generation.

She advised that plastics must be replaced with paper bag, also, purchase items in bulk to reduce hoarding of polythene bags in our homes.

She further advised teachers to create groups in schools to enlighten students on recycling and admonished students to separate plastic waste from metal, during disposal in bins for easy identification and recycling.

Schools that participated in the program were handed certificates of participation.

In his final remarks, the deputy director of NCCE for the municipality, Mr Osman Seidu, admonished the students to stop littering and keep their surrounding clean, he also pointed that, flouting environmental rules such as reckless dumping of refuse is tantamount to payment of fine. In conclusion, the students were excited about the new acquired knowledge on waste disposal. Below are picture of the celebrations:
